Our Great Depression

Coral Aston

1 in 4 people will experience mental health issues. There are many stigmas attached to mental illnesses, for example, it’s assumed that men cannot suffer which is untrue. Furthermore, some people assume that sufferers are unable to do things. With these stigmas, people feel unable to express themselves. I myself have depression and have found that many of the reactions I’ve had have been negative. Those who are supposed to care for me the most have said horrible things like I’m just doing it for attention, not listening and refusing to understand important things to help. I have visited the doctors to see if they could help but I got little attention, instead of listening to me I got referred to talking therapy. It has now been 5 months and I have still heard nothing. This lack of urgency for mental health patients worries me, there could be someone waiting even longer than myself who could really benefit from this treatment. As a society, we lack real knowledge of the subject. Personally, I’ve only been mental health briefly taught once at school, I think this is appalling. We should teach people that it is okay to have mental health issues and that there is help available, and we should teach not to discriminate someone because of it. To me, it is very important to have the knowledge of mental illness from a young age as it enables people to speak out and talk about their feelings which could help themselves and others.
