Festive Lights

In 2016 Scotland received 35,000 homeless applications. Edinburgh is accountable for 1,675 of these. This city is one of the wealthiest in Scotland. For the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh should be ashamed this. Edinburgh is a massive tourist attraction for Scotland- do we want first impressions to be that we cannot help our own people? Although homelessness in Scotland has decreased, it shouldn't be up to the public to spare their change; the government should do more. We have time for events for the purpose of our own entertainment, but what about the people who don't have a home to go to at the end of the night? If we didn’t only care for entertainment, we could make a significant difference to poverty. Small percentages of profits being donated to charities would help, even a short message at the end of the show to remind people about homelessness can have an impact on someone's life. I have created this series of photographs to highlight this issue. The patterns of the lights has been used to represent lights at festivals, this draws the viewer as we are drawn to the lights of festivals we visit, the lights can also represent festive times which can be upsetting to homeless people. If you look further you can see a person, this represents the people we neglect.
