I created this self-portrait as a response to a project titled "What is Self?" By researching, I came to realise that we all have many selves. We are all different depending on who we are with, whether we are alone, or with family or friends, each presentation of ourselves is slightly different. This response really helped me to gain a further understanding of myself. During art at high school I was encouraged to draw self-portraits and for some reason I felt really uncomfortable and self-conscious about drawing myself. Now, most of my work focuses on portraits, and often myself. I think it opens up another dimension of self-acceptance and I really recommend it. The idea behind my work may not always be the same as what the viewer sees, but I think that it is a beautiful thing when a painting can give so many different explanations to different people.
