There is always a story behind every portrait. In my preliminary studies I tried to capture my friend Ragnar as a person, exploring his personality, his background, his mannerisms. Ragnar is an interesting character, many people find him quite threatening due to his look, yet when you talk to him you begin to understand that he is misinterpreted. He is quite the opposite, he is quiet, kind, polite and reserved. However he does take his work seriously. When it came to the painting I tried to reveal the individual through strong dynamic expressive techniques to reflect the youth and the vitality of the sitter yet also his intensity. The first impression the viewer has is that the painting is black and white. However as you approach the portrait small shades of colour that appear are not recognisable from a distance. This colour reveals more of the painting and more of the sitter.
