CC Time- Voices In My Head

Christian Noelle Charles

I’ve been living in Glasgow for the past year and I will soon obtain MFA at Glasgow School Art. Working outside of the United States has heightened my own awareness about identity. Working as a black American woman outside of the United States has offered me a unique view of myself and of black identity. I'm forwarding my research in Glasgow in outside of a institution for the same reason. I hope to expand my perceptions on black female identity in an even larger scenic setting. I want to use The John Byrne Award as a resource to explore concepts of self-love and respect in black female identities in a place that is within urban contemporary setting. With this in mind, I want to use this prize to explore the dynamic relationship between performer and the landscape as its audience. A lot of my work is centered around performance. Through video performances, using the Glasgow community as my audience, I hope to see what connections I can make between performer-audience relationships, black female identities, self-love and respect. With the help of these communities, I believe my perceptions, storytelling and performance abilities will reach new heights.
