Our entry is a banner displaying dystopian images of society. The accompanying background audio uses clips that were hugely formative in the values we hold today. We want to create an overwhelming experience taking you through aspects of what alienation means to us. The piece conveys how little real change we have seen in the divisions in wealth and class and the past 30 years.
Our entry expresses the anger and hopelessness felt from having a lack of control over your life and competition as a destructive force on mental health and our relationships. In preparing to start our entry, we read 'The Spirit Level', 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist' and ‘Jimmy Reid’s Alienation speech’. We are frustrated at how little progress has been made in fighting our country’s social issues. The most prominent issue that stands out to us now is the wealth gap between the leading 1% and the rest of the world. While society is structured in this way the vicious circle repeats.  To us this means escaping a greed fuelled society where we tear each other down to get to the top. We believe strongly that a person will not feel the want to contribute to a society that is abusing their right to equality. We must learn to value each other as equals and accept that we need each other to give ourselves the best chance at a good quality of life.
