Hymn

Amy Shearer

I found it difficult to choose one set of values that define this piece as I feel there are so many societal elements encompassed within it. Humanity, kindness and tradition are all values which I think are within this monologue. If I had to choose one to describe, I think it would have to be kindness. Spirituality plays such an important role - I wrote this after feeling that there is much stigma in society surrounding religious beliefs. Those in the religious service seem to be very alienated - I simply wanted to try and create a realistic voice which almost explores and reminds people that under the habit there is a real person with both a past and future. The subject matter is based very much on forgiveness; I wanted to bring out this quality and felt this was a good opportunity to do so. Meaning in life is something that is very much debated; for every individual it is different. Writing about someone who has received a religious calling allowed me to explore various thoughts and feelings of someone in this role. Overall, I hope that it encompasses the true meaning of kindness in society standing the test of time.
