Alex McConnell

This piece was inspired by fears, fears of germs in particular. I wanted to create something that was beautiful to look at but when you find out the true meaning behind it, it is something much more disturbing. I used glass to create this piece to highlight the effects of a disease and how it can make someone completely fragile. I created it by using different colours of frit glass between two pieces of clear glass, then put into the kiln overnight to fuse together. I then took photographs of myself in different positions and printed them onto decal paper and transferred them onto the back of the finished glass. The end result was to make the glass look like I was being eaten alive by germs and bacteria. I wanted to keep my face covered to make it almost anonymous and add to the disturbing concept.
