A Swallow's Song

Mhairi Claire Lynch

Growing up, I had different members of my family experiencing memory loss to varying degrees. With each experience of this, I was often left with the urge to communicate the pain but also the beautiful moments one can have with a family member suffering from this type of sickness. In this story, I try to emphasise the strength and responsibility that the illness brings out in surrounding family members, which can really be a beautiful thing to watch and experience myself. I would say I focused on the values of kindness and humanity, highlighting the commitment and love of family members and the often optimistic viewpoint of the ones who are sick. Ultimately I hope this piece gives insight into what living with memory loss can be like, and how to have patience and loving when helping those who are suffering.
